Key Points
Main Information
The race starts and finishes at the Balfron Campus (High School). Please see the map below for directions.
There will be car parking at the campus, although as the car park exit crosses the race route, cars will not be allowed to leave until the race finishes – and not before 12:30 at the earliest. Alternative car-parking is available at Shearer’s Garage, the Co-operative car park, or the Donaldson Park car park, all around 5 minutes walk away (see map below). Alternatively there is on-street parking available but PLEASE DO NOT park on Roman Road – as this is part of the race route! Please show consideration for local residents when parking – Balfron is not accustomed to so many visitors!

Registration is open from 09:00 – 10:30 in the High School Sports Hall and race numbers, timing chips and safety pins will be provided at this time. We have had a fantastic response to the race and have over 500 entrants, so please come early to avoid a rush closer to the race start.
There are limited changing facilities and showers in the High School and there are a small number of lockers available, or clothing can be left in the sports hall – although we must stress that anything left is at the owner’s risk and no liability can be taken. Please use common sense, and don’t leave any valuables.
There are toilet facilities available in the High School.
The race starts at 11am with a safety briefing at 10:50 – please be assembled at the start by this time. The race is a mass start, so since we have over 500 runners registered we ask for runners to assemble according to expected finish time, the fastest at the front.
The route is an out and back route, following a straight road. The turning point will be clearly indicated and marshalled. There will be two water points on the route, at approx 3.4km and 6.7km. You will actually pass the return water point before the outward water point but please DO NOT cross the road – the outward water point is only 100m or so further on. Similarly on the return, you will pass the outward water point approx 100m before the return point – again DO NOT cross the road.
The route will be largely traffic free, although access to the few properties on the route cannot be denied, so there may be the occasional vehicle. Please keep left at all times, except on the return into the village, where you will be marshalled onto the pavement on the right. Please be aware that the route follows a country road, and that the surface can be uneven in places. Whilst suitable precautions for safety have been taken by the race organisers, please remember you are responsible for your own safety at all times.
St. Andrews Ambulance will be in attendance and offering First Aid cover. If you are experiencing any difficulties or concerns, please contact them or any of the race marshals – identifiable by their hi-vis jackets.
We wish you an enjoyable and rewarding race and hope you are pleased with your result. If you have any additional questions, please email to info@balfron10k.org.uk
Kind regards

The race, recently voted the number one 10K in Scotland, by the readers of a national running magazine, takes place at Balfron Campus on Sunday 25th April at 11am.
The race entry fees and sponsorship has
raised over £21,000 for Balfron High School and Balfron Primary School,
in the last three years. But runners are raising additional funds for
a variety of their favourite charities.
Mairi Clark, the main sponsor of the
2010 10K and Managing Director of the Mulberry Bush Montessori explained
”Last year my staff and I ran the10K and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
It’s a real community event with an electric atmosphere. Parents of
the Montessori children in both the Killearn and Glasgow locations
wanted
to add their commitment to the race this year and make it a real
Mulberry
Bush Montessori team event - so we are all running for SSAFA and
the Chest, Heart and Stroke Foundation Scotland. This endorses my
personal
and professional commitment to an active healthy lifestyle for all”.
Meanwhile the race has attracted the
attention of Glasgow based Creative Design Agency reflex blue. Colin
Docherty, the Managing Director has encouraged his employees to get
in training for the big day. Colin said “The whole company has entered
the 10K so there is no going back. I ran the race last year and raised
over £1500 for Quarriers and although I was not the fastest it was
certainly the most enjoyable 10K that I have ever completed. It’s
the first 10K race for many of the staff here so there is more than
a bit of competition in the office. I haven’t told them about that
wee hill at the 7km point yet. “ Colin and his reflex blue team are
running for Rhian Dallachy of Drymen who receives respite care at
Countryview
at Quarriers in Bridge of Weir.
Colin Mendham Race Director said, “
The response to the race has been fantastic again and entries are coming
in thick and fast. We are on target to having around 600 runners on
the day. Entries are coming in from all over and we even have an entry
from Dubai - a Scot who has been working over there for 12 years is
returning to set up home in the area. Although he’ll be running in
cooler climes he saw the race on line and wants to sample the local
atmosphere of the 10K – he is running for Diabetes UK. And a
little nearer home, three members of the Reid family from Balfron are
raising valuable funds for CLIC Sargent, the first of eight challenging
events they will carry out in 2010.”
But a single outstanding effort by Terry
Wright of Ayr has put running for charity in a league of his own. Terry
is running 1000 kilometres this year for MENCAP and Help the Heroes.
In addition to running the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k in April
his schedule will include running ten 10K’s, ten half marathons, a
duathlon, a kilo-athlon, a Highland Games 10k in a kilt, the Eden
Project
Marathon and as a festive treat – a Santa Dash, a Reindeer Run and
to finish off a Turkey Trot – all adding up to 1000 kilometres on
the road.
The main sponsor of the event is Mulberry
Bush Montessori, with support from Careth Ltd, Endrick Property, Steven
Burgess Fine Furniture, The Beech Tree Inn, Graham’s Dairy, CKD
Galbraith,
The Running Company, Balfron Campus, Webreturn Internet, D McCallum
& Son and many other local sponsors.
We will having a litter pick on the 10k route on Sunday 18th April. Volunteers will be very welcome, meet at Balfron High School at 2pm. This is a great way to get to know the route if you've not run it before.

A Runaway Success
The children of Balfron Primary School and Balfron High School were delighted this week to receive a couple of extra large cheques from the recent Co-operative Balfron 10K road race. Almost 600 runners took part in Balfron's 3rd annual 10K last month and raised over £7500 for local schools. Already voted Scotland's 5th best 10K, by the readers of a National running magazine, the race has captured the imagination of the local community and runners of all abilities from all over the UK.
Ann McIntosh, Head Teacher of Balfron Primary said, " We are thrilled for the children to benefit from this community event. It reinforces our commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle. After discussions with parents and teachers, we will be considering buying safety flooring for the outdoor play equipment and to use the services of a dance exercise tutor to ensure all pupils benefit from this generous donation."
Stuart MacKay, Principal Teacher of PE at Balfron High School said, "This is a fantastic sum of money that the Co-operative Balfron 10K is donating to both schools and it is very much appreciated. We are initially hoping to buy Balfron High School Team strips across a wide range of activities including football, gymnastics, athletics, and basketball.
Colin Mendham, Race Director said, " The Co-operative Balfron 10K race gets bigger and better every year. Our sincere thanks go out to our very generous main sponsor, the Co-operative, local business sponsors, the runners, spectators and the army of volunteers who give up their time to ensure that Balfron hosts a very prestigious and successful 10K. The comments from runners and sponsors alike on our website www.balfron10k.org.uk are so encouraging. We'll be back in 2010 for the 4th Co-operative Balfron 10K in April - keep an eye on our website for further details."

FOUR talented young Balfron High athletes will be setting the pace at the school’s 4K next month.
The race will be run before the Co-operative Balfron 10K on Sunday, April 26 – and the fantastic foursome from Central Athletics Club will be among the favourites.
Tom Watson (15) won gold last month in the under-17 800m at the Scottish Indoor Championships. His time of 2.01.32 broke the record set by former Balfron High pupil Alistair Hay in 2001.
Joining Tom at the recent Forth Valley Schools Championships were fellow pupils Imogen Burnell (13), Kieran Everden (14) and Andrew McInally (12), who all proved they were forces to be reckoned with.
Stuart MacKay, principal teacher of PE, said: “We have some very talented runners at Balfron and the 4K race last year proved to be a real success, with more than 80 pupils taking part.
“The atmosphere was electric for runners and spectators alike and the event is a huge fundraiser for the school.
“This year even more pupils are signed up to run the 4K whilst many members of staff are also in training to run the main Balfron 10K.”

I am writing
to let you know details of this year's Co-operative Balfron 10k. This
year's race takes place on Sunday 26th April 2009 at 11am.
First run in
2007, this event has proved extremely popular with runners of all
abilities. The officially measured course, chip-timing, winners prizes
and professional organisation appeal to the most serious runners, whilst the
friendly atmosphere, traffic-free route and excellent goody bags including
commemorative medal and T-shirt make it a great race for the more casual runner
and even first-time 10k-er.
We have
received excellent reviews from runners and press alike, and are expecting in
excess of 500 runners again this year.
Online
entries are now open at www.balfron10k.org.uk
or download an entry form and post it in. Subject to availability we will
be accepting entries on the day, but would advise early advance entry to ensure
a place and a guaranteed medal and T-shirt.
Balfron is an
attractive rural village in West Stirlingshire, and can be easily reached from Glasgow (30 mins), Edinburgh
(1hr 15) and Stirling (25 mins).
If you
require any additional information about the event then please contact me by
email or phone, or you can find more details on www.balfron10k.org.uk. All
proceeds raised from this event are being donated to the local primary and
secondary schools.

CHILDREN at Balfron’s primary and high schools were delighted this week to have extra large cheques presented to them thanks to the recent Co-operative Balfron 10k road race.
More than 450 runners took part in the village’s second 10k race in April, raising £5636.
Balfron Primary headteacher Ann McIntosh said: “We are absolutely thrilled for the children to receive this money and after early discussions with teachers and pupils we will plan what further resources to invest in, to ensure every child in the school benefits from this very generous donation.
“The Co-operative Balfron 10K was very much a community event and it reinforced Balfron Primary’s commitment to healthy living, exercise and well being.
“Our sincere thanks to everyone who ran, supported or organised the event and the business community sponsors who embraced the idea from its conception.”
Pupils from the primary school were able to run in their own races on the day, and the PE department from Balfron High School also organised a 4K race for their pupils.
Stuart McKay of Balfron High School PE department said: “That is a fantastic sum of money to have raised and we greatly appreciate the donation the 10K is making to the school.
“We are currently considering various plans to invest the money in additional outdoor activity equipment. Thank you to all those who made it possible.”
Colin Mendham, chairman of the organising committee, said: “We are so pleased to hand over these cheques to Balfron Primary and High Schools.
“The second Co-operative Balfron 10K was a huge success and we were delighted to have so many runners take part in the road race and so many spectators support the event.
“Comments from runners, from all over the country, on our website have been fantastic and feedback on the improvements we made from last year were well received.
“It is pleasing to see pupils benefit from the road race and I’m sure the 2009 race will be an even bigger success.
“I would like to say a special thank you to the Co-operative, and our other sponsors, and all the volunteer helpers, without whom the event would not have been possible.”

BBC Scotland sports presenters Rhona McLeod and John Beattie will swap their microphones for running shoes, for one day only, to run the Co-operative Balfron 10K road race on Sunday, April 27.
Rhona was the celebrity commentator at Balfron’s first 10K last year and was so impressed with the spirit of the community event that she decided to enter the race in 2008.
"Last year I was helping at the Balfron 10K which was great fun, but I was jealous of all those taking part,” said Rhona.
“The atmosphere was great as more than 600 runners lined up in anticipation of one of the most beautiful courses in the country. The consensus was that it was tough, but a fabulous 10K.”
She added: “The race is so completely different to any other I have encountered — I'll definitely be on the starting line this year."
Meanwhile her colleague, former Scotland rugby international John Beattie has decided to keep Rhona company.
Colin Mendham, chairman of the Co-operative Balfron 10K, said: “ We are thrilled that both Rhona and John are running the 10K. Last year was a huge success for us and we intend to make it even bigger and better this year.
“With the generosity of the Co-operative we have been able to introduce a chip and timing device — an electronic transmitter attached to each runner’s leg to ensure finishing times are recorded quickly and efficiently.
“We already have more than 300 entries and are well on target of attracting more than 700 runners for the event.
“I would ask anyone who wants to run this popular 10K to enter online now at www.balfron10k.org.uk.”
Starting from Balfron Campus at 11am on April 27, The Co-operative Balfron 10K road race will follow a scenic route heading out towards Fintry. The Co-operative is the main sponsor of the event with supporting local sponsors including the Mulberry Bush Montessori Ltd, Speedy Generators, Careth Landscaping, Balfron Campus, Graham’s Family Dairy, Jewsons and many more smaller local businesses.
All funds raised from the race are being shared between Balfron Primary School and Balfron High School.

LAST year’s successful Balfron 10K saw the setting up of a village running club for locals taking part in the event.
Now they’ve been bitten by the running bug, they’re hoping the club can provide the winner of the second 10K on Sunday, April 27.
Following 12 months of hard training, Balfron Running Club members are expecting to improve on their personal bests at the Co-operative sponsored run.
David Eckersley, one of the club’s trainers, said: “It’s been great to see how everyone has improved over this year and we have some talented runners in the group.
“It’s certainly not unrealistic to think one of them could win. And of course we have the advantage of training regularly on the course and having the support of a home crowd!”
Balfron Running Club began life as a temporary training group for last year’s inaugural 10k race. It was such a success that there was great demand to make the running club and members now meet at Balfron Campus every Wednesday at 7.45pm to follow a programme of warm-ups and stretches, followed by a structured training session.
“We welcome runners of all abilities, from beginners to seasoned marathon runners so if you are looking to improve your running, or get in shape for the 10k why not join us?” said David.
Anyone interested can go along on a Wednesday or call Balfron Campus on 01360 440940 for more information.
There is still time to enter this year’s Balfron 10K. You can enter online or you can print off an entry form on the website at www.balfron10k.org.uk. Alternatively, entry forms are available at Balfron Campus, Balfron Library and other local outlets.
Further information on the Co-operative Balfron 10K is available from Colin Mendham on 01360 440175.
All proceeds from the race will be shared between Balfron Primary and High Schools.

The children of Balfron Primary School were rather delighted this week to have an extra large cheque presented to them from the funds raised from the recent Co-op Balfron 10k road race. Over 600 runners took part in the village’s first ever 10k road race in April, with the amount raised totalling an amazing £8,454.16
Ann McIntosh, Head teacher said, ”We are absolutely thrilled for the children to receive this money and it is our intention to initially buy outdoor playground equipment. After early discussions with teachers, pupils and parents, it is suggested that we will meet to plan what further resources and activities to invest in, to ensure every child in the school benefits from this very generous donation.” She added, “The Co-op Balfron 10K was very much a community event and it reinforced Balfron Primary’s commitment to healthy living, exercise and well being. What started out as a general fundraising idea snowballed into a spectacular event and memorable day for Balfron. Our sincere thanks to the organisers, everyone who ran the 10k, all those who supported the event and the business community sponsors who embraced the idea from its conception.”
Colin Mendham, the Chairman of the organising committee commented, “We are so pleased to hand over this cheque to Balfron Primary School. The Co-op Balfron 10k was a huge success and we were elated to have so many runners take part in the road race and so many spectators support the event. Comments from runners, from all over the country, on our website have been fantastic (www.balfron10k.org.uk) and we will definitely be organising another for 2008. If anyone wishes to be kept informed about the 2008 Balfron 10k, you can do so through the web site and follow the links to the mailing list. Colin added “ It is very pleasing to see the children of Balfron Primary benefit from the Co-op Balfron 10k road race. I’m sure the race will prove to be a successful annual event.

For more details on the programme, which is specifically aimed at new runners, please contact 01360 440940. Entry forms and further details of the Balfron 10K are available at www.balfron10k.org.uk or contact Colin Mendham on 01360 440175.
